powerpoint paralysis

Many companies like Philips have a powerpoint culture. New business proposals, briefings, evaluations, etc. are presented loosely in huge drafty powerpoint shows - mostly without a short and written management summary. Too often it turns out the plans presented are not really sophisticated. As a result, Powerpoint in many cases only serves as a distraction from the actual story being told. The goal should be to create a compelling presentation. It should support the verbal presenation and not serve as a replacement. Powerpoint presentations should serve as a supplement, a way to visually present that information being given in a way that is easy to understand. In the end, Powerpoint will not save a bad presenter or a misguided presentation, but it can serve as a valuable tool if used properly.

paris thinks: Powerpoint can also distract from stories being told - which sometimes work much better than graphics and charts. Often 'listening' works best, but if there is something to look at most people won't as they are too distracted.
itssimple thinks: The basic idea is that so matter what presenation format you use, if the presentation is not compelling, there isn't even an issue. Presentations should be short and to the point. I've seen my share of 50MB proposals and by slide 10, I stop paying attention knowing that there are only 40 more slides (usually repeating the same material) to come. I also agree with paris that a powerpoint should be in support of presentation, it should not contain the entire presentation.
