Flat TV
"I really like the looks of the Flat TVs in the market. In my opinion, on top of being nicely designed, a Flat TV is supposed to free up some space at home. However, to enjoy your Flat TV you will need many other devices (e.g. DVD, Set-top box), which in most cases still need a table to be placed."
The Flat TV is the centerpeice of any home entertainment system. It's sleek, looks great, and can even be considered a part of your home decor. Unfortunately, a televison is only one component of a true entertainment solution. What about the DVD player, receiver, and all the other components? The same design characteristics of the Flat TV are rarely carried into these components.

One approach may provide a solution. Designers could integrate the components within the television much the same way as a computer drive can be easily replaced with a different type of drive. Modular components would simplify the home theater dilemma. A negative aspect of this is that user are locked into purchasing certain types of components which goes against the desire to find the best component for the best value. Although a benefit is the elimination of multiple remotes and countless cables. There are definitely trade-offs when assembling a home entertainment experience. It's up to the individual to decide what aspects they are willing to live with or without.

w84it thinks: I have a TV, DVD player, Laptop, CD player, digital set top box for cable TV, playstation, amplifier, speakers.

My life would be so much simpler if there was a single Flatscreen with built in DVD, hard drive, and digital driver for cable. Any additional boxes should fit onto it in a modular way and remove the need for cables.

Roadmeister thinks: The current state of affairs is a mess. Not only should peripherals such as DVRs, set-up boxes etc. be integrated but home entertainment should be truly multi-media. You can buy a decent home cinema set and a decent audio set but you cannot buy a system that does both well (at least on a budget).
