Technology and Terrorism
"Gone are the days when terrorism was a rare occurance. We are now faced with how to minimize the threat. What kinds of technology can we use to capture and deter terrorist , yet not create a world of security issues for the rest of us?"
Terrorism has become a fact of modern life. Throughout history, there has always been a perceived threat from others. Technology could play a major part in minimizing this threat, but it is not the only action that needs to be taken. Foreign policy must also be changed as to not alienate populations, in turn creating another potential threat. We must all work together, both through the use of technology and security measures and through our own actions to create a world which is balanced and treats everyone equally. Of course, areas with more potential for terrorist activity should have more security over those who don't, but it should be the responsibility of us all to combat the threat before it shows itself.

itssimple thinks: I agree that technology should be the solution. If Las Vegas casinos can have face recognition software to capture card counters, surely we can come up with technology to capture known terrorists.
Symph thinks: I don't believe that any kind of technology could help to totally eradicate terrorism. The best way to combat this threat is for the public to be vigilant and act as the eyes and ears to spot suspicious behaviour. Terrorists can adapt their behaviour to avoid detection by technical means or recruit new people who aren't well known to the authorities and wouldn't be picked up on iris or face recognition systems. If it means I have to add a few extra hours to a journey to allow for security checks it's a price I am willing to pay.
