Cell Phones in Cinemas

I've often been confronted with the incredibly annoying sound of someone's cell phone ringing during a movie. This seems to happen more than it should despite messages before the movie. The question is, is there an simple way to avoid this without changing peoples experience?

Nothing ruins a good movie more than someone's cellphone ringing...except possibly if they actually answer it and begin having an actual conversation.

It should be up to the individual to show common courtesy when in a movie theater. Adding additional technology to eliminate this inconvenience would only result in higher ticket prices and considering the current price to see a movie, it may soon become a luxury just to go to a theater to see a movie.
