LuckyShoe questions:
Do we expect too much from technology?
With the preliferation of technology, it now seems that we look to technological advances to better our lives and our health. Is this a false notion? Is technology really the answer to all of our health problems?
View A
From fat burning pills to LASIK eye surgery, we are now able to correct physical problems with our bodies with minimal effort. Technology has allowed us to remove complications associated with everyday health problems.
View B
Technology only produces more health problems. Just look at the number of cases of heart disease and cancer. Technology can not do all the work. We must take an active role in maintaining our health.

Maverick thinks: I think it's important to use technology wisely. Technology should not be a quick fix. It should not be used to create unrealistic expectations. Too many people rely on medical technology to fix things that they are unwilling to change on their own. Maybe all we need is technology that could somehow provide us motivation to better ourselves or allow us to easily track our health in a way that is natural and uncomplicated.
Geek1 thinks: I think technology can only help us and advance us as a society. We are who we are based on technology. Imagine if the industrail revolution never happened. Where would we be as a society. Yes, there are times when technology takes a negative turn and creates unexpected side effects, but the overall benefit is undeniable.
jk thinks: Technology advances allows us to threaten and indeed reverse the role of the tooth fairy. You now give money and you can wish for new teeth (okay, via the dentist..), but shiny new teeth you can get. One day, will we really threaten or reverse the role of mother nature? Yes! Pay money and get what you want. By that time, our celebrities will be those people who have looked after themselves and who have their original parts in working order. They will be unlike most of the population who will have been ignoring their health responsibilities. So, I see most of the population using technology to achieve the standards set by their culture or, perhaps even worse, the standards being promoted by the companies developing the technology.
donnam thinks: I agree that there needs to be balance. Yes, there are pills to burn fat, but time after time, science has later proven them to be unsafe. The old fashioned way of burning fat - moving more, consuming less - has yet to be proven unsafe. But then again some people need the assistance of a pill to help with their cholesterol when diet and exercise aren't enough to help them. I think it's unwise to rely too heavily on technology out of laziness, in all aspects of life. Email may be great, but doesn't it make your day to get a handwritten card from your friend in the mail? You can download a movie and watch it on your computer or other device, but what about the pleasure in going to the theater and enjoying the movie with others, and taking in the smell of popcorn while you are surrounded by the sights and sounds on the screen? Balance is everything.
Aos thinks: I think technology should be limited in some instances. I've seen many people try to use technology as a quick fix to their problems. Namely in the areas of weight lose, people turn to pills or stomach stapling surgery in order to solve their weight problem and other health issues associates with obesity, but inevitably those individuals gain the weight back. In cases like this, I believe science is a hinderance and allows people the opportunity to dismiss their own resposibilities and turn to "solutions" that only lead to more health-related problems.
badmojo thinks: Life is not a passive activity. We will always interact with things that will change us, whether it is what we eat, how we exercise, or how we take care of our health. There will always be a need for drastic means to cure certain ailments, but overall, it is up to the individual to care for their own health. We should not rely so much on technology to fix things that we clearly have the power to fix ourselves.
simpleenough thinks: I want technology to fix every defect i have. that's what technology is for. it allows us to not have to worry about things because it will take care of it for us. maybe this makes us lazy, but people are more than willing to pay for convenience.
