JBonnin questions:
Measures
English is definitely the most spread language of all nowadays, spoken by people from all over the world.

One cannot say the same about feet, inches and pounds.

Wouldn´t it be time to adopt the metric system universally?

Hail to the differences! There are loads of conversion tools at hand.

digiammarco thinks: We all know it will take ages.... why don't we start right away?
BigA thinks: Yes, let's get going. I vote for the metric system this is most modern, logical and easy to handle by computers. So, what do we do? Send a letter to George Bush? (just kidding but it will be difficult to agree on as the costs for the countries that would have to change are immense, just think of something like Y2K.)
priceaam thinks: Lets go to metric, at least get everyone on the same system. While we are at it if everyone spoke one langugage it would make things a whole lot easier.
Maven thinks: There are so many different types of measurements out there, from temperature to weights to length and volume. Do we standardize everything around the world in these terms. If this is the case, why not standardize money and forget about conversions of all kinds. I'm sure in the past there were reasons for these differences, but it's time to move into a new modern age where we don't have to think about such minor details.
lucien86 thinks: As a scientist I love the metric system, but imperial has its place and forcing children to learn and use both systems together is extremely good for them mathematically. There is also a different more subtle problem, metric is based on a kind of lie and it is only possible to appreciate this when you understand a system like imperial as well. Finally switching to a totally metric system would mean using only Celsius for temperature and abandoning the mile (it is very common for engineers to think in millimetres, meters and kilometres but also use miles - the mile is simply a more human measure).

SacredVermin thinks: I agree with lucien. Let's just hope that Mars lander impact fiascos are kept to a minimum. However, I find metric easier, even though I was brought up on imperial.
trickyskills thinks: I will defend the correct use of English grammar all day long, but measurements...

Yep, I think it's about time we caught up with the rest of civilisation and dropped the pounds and stones. It's starting to slowly creep in, which only goes to make it even more confusing until there is a conversion across the board.

sutabo thinks: in most cases many people around the world use both. i say stick with metric simply based on the fact that most scientific methodology is based on this measurment system. at the same time, it will be difficult to change public perception if they find a system that they consider their own.
mfinney thinks: Sure let's change to the metric system, after I and other dinosaurs like me are dead and gone.
