idesign questions:
Why do we carry so many keys?
Keys are so easily misplaced and often lost. Plus, it's yet another item to carry with you on a daily basis. Are modern security methods any better or do they just pose a new set of problems?
View A
The traditional lock and key mechanism is tried and true. It's worked for centuries, why change things.
View B
Security cards, key pads, and biometric identification make things easier and minimize the difficulties associated with keeping up with keys.

simpleton thinks: definitely b. of course massive problems with cross compatabilities and security risk if you ever lose something like a swipe card that allows access to lots of locations. but b makes sense.
clo thinks: Key's provide a certain level of security in knowing that they can not be "hacked". Although it would be great to not carry around numerous odd shaped keys, a truly secure method of locking mechanism such as biometric access would probably be to expensive to implement. I believe the lack of enthusiasm toward new technology in this area is more psychological. It's would be difficult knowing that you're secure with any other form of electronic lock.
Andrewww thinks: Hmmm, yes i'm sure cards and bioscans are much more reliable. But there's something comforting and trustworthy about a commen metal key.

Can't we come up with a combi? Feels like a key but reliable as an iris-scan?

JBonnin thinks: I wouldn' t feel confortable at all to have an electronic lock at home. I live in a penthouse at the eleventh floor of a building. What would happen in case of a fire which compromised the building' s electric installations? Would I get locked indoors?
peon thinks: The reason we still use keys/mechanical locks is because they are CHEAP. Biometric locks costs 5x more than "regular" locks. As for security, I do not believe the mechanical locks are as safe as we are led to believe.

Of course, while biometric/electronic locks provide better security and more convenience, it relies (like JBonnin pointed out) on electricity.... So either you'd keep having to replace the batteries on the unit or good luck to you when the electricity is out.
