What features will your smart home have?

More and more integration of technology is happening in the home. As a result, homes are now being built with features already built-in. Whether it's a security system, entertainment systems, or simple lighting systems. What features, if any, would you want in your ideal home?

I've always thought that an excellent to manage the use of electricity is to add motion detectors to rooms to determine if the lights should be on or off. I know that Microsoft has been working on systems where not only do the lights turn on to your desired levels, the room may also start playing your favorite music and show your favorite artists paintings on a digital canvas.

I wish I could access my home from anywhere simply by going to a personalized 'home page'. It could integrate lighting, security systems, and even allow me to turn the lights on and off while I'm away. An interesting feature might be to also show me power consumption over the span of a month. I think that would allow more people, especially business travellers, to leave their home with the peice of mind that they can still keep watch over it.

I do want technology in my home. Just make sure you meet my criteria:

- Invisible. Or at least as small as possible. Remove all wires and boxes and let it disappear.
- Self configuring. Have already spent too many valuable hours attaching DVD recorders to TVs, PC to TV etc.
- Easy to use. My wife must be able to use it without me having to play the role our our home's "technology operator."
- Providing real value. I don't need all kinds of crazy gadgets that just waste my time and create a mess.
- Low power consumption. Power prices are going up and the lifetime cost of one device versus the other can be substantial. Hey, think about CO2 emissions.
