PaulJames questions:
Why do I have so many remote controls?
I love my TV, my DVD player and my Hi-Fi however I can lose track of the remote controls for each piece of equipment, especially as my stereo is a separates system with each piece having it’s own remote.

There should be one remote control to control everything in my house.

One of the most annoying things about remote controls is that there is so many of them. You know how it is – I want to turn my TV down but I’ve got the remote for the stereo in my hand! So I look for the TV remote and after 10 minutes o searching, it’s always in the last place I look – under the sofa. Surely a remote control that controls everything is a must. It’s especially annoying where one of your remote controls gets broken or misplaced and the only way to use a piece of equipment is to order a new one as there are no manual controls. I think there should be a law that states that each household is only allowed one remote.

Having one remote complicates things even more.

I recently bought a ‘One for all’ remote, which claimed that all my remote control troubles would be over. How wrong they were. Not only was it impossible to ‘calibrate and ‘program’ it to each piece of electrical equipment (it just seemed to have a mind of it’s own), it was also impossible to then put it into action. I tried to turn down my air-conditioning but ended up recording the weather program on my VCR. One remote for each piece of equipment makes sense to me. You just need somewhere to put them!

Simpely1 thinks: Although its never A or B, I want to have the best of both worlds, dont bother me with complexity, just give me simplicity!
2brick thinks: Rather than controlling all devices by remote, the majority of devices should be able to independently understand your needs, so you do not have to control them.

Therefore, the amount of devices that you would need to operate by remote control would be massively decreased and a 1-size-fits all remote control would be easier to operate.

Claudia thinks: It must - somehow - be possible to invent a remote which is really easy to calibrate. Than it would make sense to have only one for all devices.
sorenpommer thinks: I don´t want to replace my remote controls with a PC type thing. But if it can be done smartly, so it knows which device I want to control and only shows me the few possible options, then this option is best for me.
Simpler thinks: just make sure it knows which device I´m communicating with and keep the number of buttons low. Everyone visiting me should be able to use it without instructions...!
marieke thinks: The consumer electronics industry should create unified interaction design - even the most basic commands are on different loctions.
