Are traffic lights dangerous?
nasherb thinks: Just to add... I have been a police officer in the UK for ten years and Canada for the last two. I have seen more serious accidents at intersections governed by traffic lights in Canada and the UK than I ever did on roundabouts. take what you want from that. The issue is safety. Are roundabouts safer? In my view yes. Are traffic lights a pain in the back side at 3am when nothings on the road? Yes. Do part time traffic lights on congested routes with roundabouts aid traffic flow? Yes. Should you be able to turn left on a red? Yes.

Verdict. traffic lights have there place but for road safety and general increased movement of traffic. the rounabout wins.

Are traffic lights dangerous?
nasherb thinks: After living in North America for the past few years the argument is a simple one. Since moving here I have senn nothing but carless to down right reckless drivers who drive for the green. Their only observation is forward and have little awareness of what is going on around them. This is especially true at intersections governed by traffic signals. The majority find it acceptable to race toward a green light and then try to say it suddenly changed if they go through on a red. Lights don't suddenly change. Worse still, the same motorists... which I again add is the majority regularily run yellow (amber) lights in an attempt to beat the intersection. The point being, remove the lights and put a 4 way stop and suddenly motorists start looking. Why? Because they can't blame the light for their lack of observations and they know that if they crash its more and likely their own fault. Place a roundabout in where you have a four way stop and the reaction is the same... better observations and increased safety. Be glad that the UK has so many roundabouts because the average driving standard is far higher than in North America, which is a view shared by a great majority of the local population here too.

Ianjones thinks: In cities such as London, Sheffield and Manchester investment should be made available to improve the existing road system, at main intersections, flyovers and underpasss should be built, so that traffic may pass more freely and quickly through the city to avoid a build up of carbon monoxide pollution, both roundabouts and traffic signals slow the flow of traffic.

Are traffic lights dangerous?
idesign thinks: I think traffic signals work fine in most instances, but in most instances fail to consider the state of traffic. During rush hour, of course, the street will most likely be filled with commuters trying to get home. In other instances, signals serve no purpose at all, for example on those lonely roads at 2am. What we are lacking is some form of intelligence behind the signal and how this helps traffic flow through a congested area. People talk about the "surfing the green wave" in big cities. It's the point where your timing and speed match the signals, in turn allowing you to pass through several blocks of traffic signals without stopping. If traffic systems could account for this change in traffic levels and provide a green wave for the majority of drivers, then it might work more efficiently.

Are traffic lights dangerous?
daisyfire thinks: I'm a cyclist and a car driver - whenever traffic lights fail the traffic gets safer because people have to pay more attention - and suddenly they become more courteous - I had this experience this morning on the way to work by bike. Roundabouts on the other hand are a nightmare for cyclists and for cars - no one ever remembers who has right of way and cyclists always lose out on this one - I've had so many showdowns where I have taken the correct priority only to have a car driver disregard me as a road user and nearly mow me down. I think we should get rid of roundabouts and traffic lights - and of course make real cycle lanes... but that's another debate

Simpler thinks: countries such as Denmark, Norway and Holland are rapidly replacing traffic lights with round abouts. Junctions are where most accidents happen. Research shows that they reduce accident levels (no one speeding up to cross before the light turns red) and also increase through put time since you don't have a lot of cars waiting at a red light, even if no cars are passing from the other side. So it does work.

Are traffic lights dangerous?
Maven thinks: People need to realize that driving is dangerous. We have added so many comforts and conveniences to out autpmobiles these days that we forget that we are loaded into a 100kph missle on the road. Even driving a manual transmission forces drivers to concentrate on what is going on around them. If someone stops, they have to downshift and brake. The same is true, if not moreso, for motorcycles. The inherent danger forces a rider to pay constant attention to the road and the drivers around them. It's important to realize that the comforts we have grown accustomed to might not be the most optimal way to keep us out of traffic accidents.

Are traffic lights dangerous?
Greenhair thinks: What makes traffic lights dangerous is the 'jumper' - people who go through lights well after they have started changing, or start before they have changed, not the lights themselves - they are essential for inner city control.

Roundabouts are excellent, but they have their snags: I also live near a small roundabout with 5 exits:i t requires great concentration to negotiate it safely when it becomes very busy - there isn't time to get in the right lane to go round it, and then come off where you wish!

Also, if the priority is anythingother than to the vehicle on the roundabout, that is a formula for disaster.

Are traffic lights dangerous?
charlie thinks: The idea behind removing traffic lights in many ways creates a larger amount of small accidents in order to avoid larger fatal accidents. I'm not sure if this is true in practice, but we do know that current traffic systems don't do a very good job of traffic management as they are now.

Are traffic lights dangerous?
daveL thinks: What is really needed are drivers that know how to drive, are aware of their environment and not forced into constantly looking at their speedometer. They need to know that driving safely will not be punished by a NIP's form and the threat of a £1000 fine if they do not pay up for doing 5mph over the speed limit. Traffic lights have their place as do roundabouts and drivers need to know how to use them and not abuse them. It seems to me that to most people the car is just a means to get from A to B. If you don't enjoy driving take the bus where you can read, eat and use your mobile phone without edangering others.
