Can money buy happiness? Are people who earn 2 dollars a day sad?
mfinney thinks: It's not a simple choice. You can be happy with the basics if you are alone or if your social circle and family live simply and are happy this way. What do you do if your partner wants the kids to go to private school? What if you meet someone who lives in London? Try living on £2 a day let alone $2. If you want to take part a full part in society you have to earn a reasonable wage. The only other choices are to stay at home with your folks (if they'll keep you) or drop out.

Can computer gaming make you smarter?
mfinney thinks: You have to use your mind to solve problems, you are alert and totally immersed (if the game is any good). This is active participation and so much better for you than sitting on the sofa watching the TV.

The one thing that worries me about it is the way the gaming experience (the images etc.) invades your dreams. I'm not sure why, but it makes me uneasy. Perhaps it changes the way you think too, on an unconscious level?

Alarm clock hell
mfinney thinks: If you get a digital clock radio (e.g. by Pure) you have none of these problems. It finds the radio stations on its own and has a back up batttery if the power goes out. It even adjusts for daylight saving all by itself.

Measures
mfinney thinks: Sure let's change to the metric system, after I and other dinosaurs like me are dead and gone.

powerpoint paralysis
mfinney thinks: There's nothing inherently wrong with powerpoint, like most technology it is just a tool. What's wrong is the way people use it: to long, too much unnecessary detail (which the audience can't possibily take in), too much inf on each slide etc. What's needed within the organisation is a clear set of guidelines for use, powerpoint ettiquette. Used propperly it is a powerful and persuasive tool to sell an argument.

Gem thinks: I have to admit that I was much happier when I was in university and completely broke. :)
